Hi Phylis,

Actually the shade fell only 8” but one inch would have been too much. The key to a repair is not to compromise the structural integrity of the shade or window. The loop wire you see is one 11 foot piece that snakes around the lower edge and should not be cut. The short section of vertical wire shown is the end of the 16” vertical support wire which is soldered into the edge wire. So, it is important to work around those wires.

The piece can be removed quite easily. First I heated the solder on the outside and let it fall off. Then I took the tip of the soldering iron and gently pushed the foil back and away from the broken piece. It is pushed just a bit not too much and should never harm the foil on the adjoining piece(s). Notice that nothing in this case was done to the other side of the broken piece. Then I gently tapped the glass from the inside until I could get my fingers on it and pull it out. Once the glass has been removed, I placed the soldering iron tip on the adhesive backing of the foil until the solder melted and I moved the tip while gently pulling the foil away from the adjoining pieces using pliers. Again, never disturb the adjoining foils. Time to remove that piece was less than ten minutes.

I hope that makes sense.
